The MIT-IBM Watson AI Lab’s leverage recent advances in AI and computational cognitive modeling, such as contractual approaches to ethics, to describe principles that people use in decision-making and determine how human minds apply them. The goal is to build machines that apply certain human values and principles in decision-making. IBM scientists also devised an independent bias rating system can determine the fairness of an AI system.

On June 8, 2020 the IBM’s CEO Arvind Krishna drafted a letter to Congress on racial justice reform in which he stated, “IBM firmly opposes and will not condone uses of any [facial recognition] technology, including facial recognition technology offered by other vendors, for mass surveillance, racial profiling, violations of basic human rights and freedoms, or any purpose which is not consistent with our values and Principles of Trust and Transparency. We believe now is the time to begin a national dialogue on whether and how facial recognition technology should be employed by domestic law enforcement agencies.”

In an effort to advance the US’s fight for equity and justice, IBM has decided to permanently cease its general purpose facial recognition and analysis software products.
